As I finish writing this I realize that it may be a little sentimental, cheesy and over the top but I mean every word of it.
Tonight we took CR out for her first lesson in democracy. She saw her parents participate in the Colorado Caucuses. There were 72 of us crammed into the library of a local elementary school, people of all colors and presumably walks of life, sexual orientation and religions. This is particularly important as we now live in a mostly white suburban neighborhood and want CR to know not all people are alike. New York it ain't! She witnessed people talking about the candidates and discussing issues and celebrating participation in the process. I lost count of the number of times people applauded at 8. She will continue to watch as her parents are delegates to our County Democratic Convention.
She also observed history as the two candidates put forward were not white men (not that there is anything wrong with them - her daddy's one!). We reminded her of her ancestor, Susan Quinn Clark who signed the declaration of sentiments and helped to gain women the right to vote. No matter what choices she makes as an adult we hope to instill in her the importance of participation in government, the blessings of citizenship and to never take for granted her voice.

Yippee for diversity!!
I hope you never stop expanding her horizons, Karen & Miles.
Of course somewhere around 13 or 14 you may wish you'd instead trained her for the convent, but that too will pass.
